MFOS Weird Sound Generator

The Weird Sound Generator, or WSG, from Music From Outer Space is arguably not a synthesizer at all depending on your definition of 'synthesizer' but it does make some complex synth-like noises. In its 'reborn' version it has two 'voices' each consisting of two non voltage controlled audio oscillators one of which can gate the other and an LFO, which can modulate the pitch of the gated oscillator. The audio oscillators go through a non voltage controlled filter (the ungated oscillator inputs can be switched off). There is no envelope generator or amplifier, and there is no provision for a controller such as a keyboard. The circuit is extremely simple, incorporating only two ICs and two transistors. As such it is described as an excellent project for the beginning DIY synth builder.

MFOS sells printed circuit boards, front panels, and component kits for the WSG as well as prebuilt units.

The circuit invites hacking there is even an 'Experiment Kludge Area' on the PC board and Scott Stites has posted information on a number of modifications (based on the original version of the WSG).
